We discussed and corrected "Harlem" questions, continued our notes to include poetry forms, and began analysis of "Smokeroom on the Kyle" as an example of narrative lyric poetry. These questions are due for Thursday. We completed poetry notes on stanza, rhyme scheme, and meter. Students completed a practice scansion assignment along-side their notes. We completed "Harlem" and read pages 159-161 as an intro to poetry forms.
Students completed the "Harlem" questions and submitted the work done for "River, Dance, and Sea" poems.
We read "Harlem", a poem related to the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. Students conducted personal research to determine the meaning of the allusions in the poem. We will complete our analysis of this piece tomorrow.
Students completed their interpretation assignment prior to visiting the library. Upon returning from the library, students worked on an assessment assignment based on the "River, Dance, Sea" poems. These questions are due for Friday.
It was good to see everyone well rested today and looking ready for spring. The next few weeks will go by fast. Today we explored interpretation of metaphor and simile in three poems. Students identified passages and explained the meaning in relation to the poem's theme. Tomorrow we will visit the library for a quick book exchange before finishing up with these three poems.
