We reviewed our practice assignments and handed in the review of sentence types. Students have a short quiz tomorrow on the three types of sentences and non-fiction reading. We began examining the structure of an expository paragraph and began our outline. Students are writing a personal response paragraph to an article suggesting that school should not start earlier than 8:30 am. We will continue with the outline and begin our draft tomorrow. Students are asked to come to class with an introductory sentence and two body sentences (inferences) in support.
We completed our review of sentence types and practiced creating compound sentence, identifying dependent clauses, and identifying the three types from examples. Students should be prepared for a quiz on this material for Tuesday of next week. The assignments handed out today are due for Monday. 8-3 will have additional class time for the last two activities as they missed some time due to the assembly.
I was hopeful but we didn't quite enough time today to complete all of the practice activities I had planned in support of learning the difference between the three types of sentences, simple, compound, and complex. I am pleased with the understanding demonstrated so far. We will postpone a quiz on this material until next Tuesday (Mondays are not generally effective days for quizzes or exams). Tomorrow we will complete a few practice activities and an assignment review that will be due on Monday should anyone not finish in class. We will then begin our analysis of paragraph structure, working towards writing our first expository paragraph.
Phew. Great week so far. Keep up the great work. Students submitted their article search and summarize activity to day. We began our notes and exercises related to simple, compound, and complex sentences. The class is progressing well but we did not get through all of the notes or activities today. As tomorrow is our library class, we will continue with sentence types on Thursday. The assignment work for this will be postponed until Friday depending on pacing.Today in class, students were given time to read and summarize three non-fiction articles of their choice. I recommended the use of google searches with the "news" tab selected to narrow searches down to manageable readings. Some students also found it helpful to visit cbc.ca and scroll through current news headlines to find interesting material for this assignment. Either strategy is fine.
All classes have completed the textbook scavenger hunt and have identified the key features of this resources that support learning. Students began notes on reading strategies for non-fiction texts and applied pre-reading and during-reading strategies to an article on sharks. Students will scour the web on Monday researching topics of their choice to further apply their non-fiction reading skills in a search and summarize project.
In Language Arts 8 we completed our first journal entry using google classroom. Students went on to examine a satirical news article and we discussed its tone, purpose, style, and intended audience. We completed a text inventory for Crossroads 8, identifying key tools that are designed to aid comprehension when using this text.Students were issued textbooks and lockers today in home room classes. In Language Arts 8, we began by logging in (or attempting to log in) to our netbook resources. We will begin our literacy boot camp tomorrow.
