We tested the theory that particles spread apart when heated causing solid materials to expand. Students heated a copper wire stretched across the classroom to witness a weight attached to the wire drop several cetemetres as it expanded. We will continue with this lab and its write-up on Monday.

We completed our topic 3 review assignment and continued working on page 209 #1-4,6,9. We discussed the expansion of solids, liquids, and gasses in relation to the particle model of matter. We observed a demonstration of the expansion of gasses in a balloon and flask when heated.
We corrected the questions from page 208 and worked in class on the assessment sheet for topic 3 that is due Thursday. Students also began work on page 209 #1-4,6,9 that will help review for next week's topic 1-4 quiz.
We completed our topic 3 notes with a discussion of the law of conservation of energy. Students had 20 min of class time to complete p. 208 #1-2, 4-7 which we will correct in class tomorrow.
We completed our heat vs temperature film after our quiz today. We discussed the remaining tenet of the particle model of mater and tested the theory of "Caloric Fluid".
We discussed the short topic 2 quiz we will have tomorrow on temperatures and temperature devices. We viewed a series of short films illustrating the behavior of molecules in solids, liquids, and gasses. We will complete this viewing activity tomorrow to finally determine the difference between heat and temperature.
We completed our topic 2 review questions in class after handing in the responses to our gas thermometer lab. Students who did not complete the review questions on the topic 2 review sheet are asked to have this ready to hand in at the beginning of tomorrow's class. We responded to two very important terms, "heat" and "temperature", defining each in our own words.
We completed our gas thermometer activity. The response sheet to this activity is due tomorrow if students did not finish today in class. We began the topic 2 review assignment as well. This will be due for Wednesday.
We completed our notes for topic 2 and built gas thermometers from test tubes. We will complete this activity on Monday.
We corrected our estimates of 18 different temperatures from the center of the sun to the normal human body temperature. We read and discussed topic 1 and the topic 2 from the text. Students observed several demonstrations of bimetallic strips used for measuring and controlling temperature as well as a demonstration of thermocouples.
